On the Tuesday night, October 19, 2010, City Council members voted 8-1 to add logiciel de filtrage du porno to the library’s wireless Internet and computer devices especially used by kids. The one and only opposed vote came from Councilwoman Trudy Wade.

The library computer porn issue was raised by Councilman Danny Thompson earlier this summer due to a number of people using public computers to visit porn websites. Yet, standpoints were varied in the Council. It was Councilman Zack Matheny who struck an average on this issue then. Using porn filter software only when a child signs on to a computer is recommended by Matheny, this point view was similar to the suggestions given by library trustees’ board. They also insisted to use bandwidth-shaping software on every computer which would make it difficult to watch porn videos or films using the library computers. Thompson indicated the fact that most of the people exposed being caught watching porn in library are adults but not children. But he still agreed with Matheny’s motion on the basis of children Internet protection. Most of the time, taking precautions is better than doing nothing. Another different point was that blocking everything would be the safest way for children.

Despite of the opposing, this public-plan was approved and the Library computers will soon have a new layer of Internet protection for children by means of installing web filter software. This plan would cost between $8,000 and $10,000 estimated by the city staff.
